Good morning Divers!!!|
Welcome those new to our list of local OC divers. Show up for a scheduled dive and you will have plenty of other divers to dive with. Welcome aboard.
Recap from our Saturday dive. When I got to the meeting spot, I met a few new people as the others started to arrive. The common thinking was, even if the viz was low, we had to give it a try. My thinking was, as long as the surf was low enough... So off to Crescent Bay to dive Deadman's. On our swim out, the viz looked like an easy 10-15 feet, yes, a bit low, but better than we've had for more than 2 months. As we dropped down we ended up off course, further W than we wanted to be, over the reef between Deadman's and Seal Rock. So the group broke apart into several smaller groups, we had 12 divers in the water. I noticed that we were in the "Compass dead zone" where your compass will read 180 degrees out and thus confusing everyone. But there was still things to see around here and since we got our bearings everyone made it back to the cove safely. Water was cold too, one of our new people had to get a hood on the way to the beach. Most of us had 40-55 minutes of bottom time and I reached 45 feet deep. But the Sargassum Weed is really bad, I kept thinking that the kelp needs to get re-established and once it does, it will cut out the light, thus the Sargassum won't fall back, but it is an ugly site to see, it just takes over. Then some of us went to lunch and some diver chit chat. It felt good to be back in the water, even though the viz was not ideal.
Current diving conditions in Laguna Beach. Surf is picking up, running 2-3+ feet right now and viz is most likely running in the 10 feet range. Send me your dive reports. Surf will pick up today & tomorrow. So stay safe as it picks up.
I heard on the news yesterday that Sea Otters have been seen off Crystal Cove. Plus other reports off San Clemente Island and other Channel Islands too. We could use them to help out with Sea Urchins. I know, they also eat Abalone, so there is give & take in having them in the area. But this is a good sign, my thinking.
Our plans are for Saturday. stay tuned.
Diving!! DO IT!! Safely...
